2008-May-21 - cigarettes
For two years they couldnТt smoke cigarettes indoors. Now they canТt smoke at all as a total smoking ban that prohibits smoking outdoors in maximum-security prisons went into effect at Kingston Penitentiary (KP) on Monday.Inmate George (not his real name) says he doesnТt smoke, but being on the inmate committee it was up to him and two other committee members to inform the others about the new rules.УWe were consulted by management that the smoke ban was coming into effect and we had to get the message out to the population Ч what can we do to stop it, what can we do try to prevent it. That was our goal,Ф George says. The general reaction was one of disappointment as three-quarters of inmates are smokers.УYouТve got a lot of guys doing long sentences, life sentences, and (this is) pretty much their home,Ф says George, who has been serving a 15-and-a-half-year sentence since 1998.УNow they are being told they canТt have cigarettes, which is a big stress reliever for a lot of people, and when you take that away that just adds more stress to the inside because it creates conflict and stuff happens.Ф

2008-Apr-4 - smokes
Shortly before writing this sentence, I literally punched myself in the head, because I'm unbelievably angry for no good reason. OK, for one good reason - I'm 24 hours into what must be my 20th attempt at quitting smokes for good (that "smoking permit" horror story was the final straw - I'd rather quit now, on my own terms, thank you, not six months down the line when I've got to apply for a licence to keep on puffing, courtesy of some titwit advisory board).I was what you might call a "furious smoker" in that the very act of smoking annoyed me, and I tended to smoke when annoyed. Now that I've (hopefully) stubbed out my last one, the nicotine's been temporarily replaced by a steady, swelling rage, which I can feel surging just behind my eyes even as I type, as though I'm preparing to transform into the Hulk at the slightest provocation. This is not a healthy state to be in. It's a shame I'm currently single, because I'd like nothing better than a massive, pointless argument right now - the sort that suddenly and unexpectedly blows up over something trivial, such as "Where did you put the towels?", before rapidly degenerating into a self-righteous festival of bellowing that only comes to an end when one or both of you breaks down in tears out of sheer confusion, and winds up crawling around on the kitchen floor like a dog, wailing and howling, with a glassy pendulum of snot swinging off the end of your nose. I get misty-eyed just thinking about it.

2008-Jan-14 - cigarettes
Wow, has another week passed already? I guess it is time for another double-dose of The Two Coreys (does a double dose of two Coreys mean a quadruple Corey dose?).This week's first episode starts off with Susie noticing that the downstairs of the house kind of smells. Feldman does not seem to notice anything, but Susie is convinced of it. And then, she hits what it must be -- Davidoff Cigarettes! cigarettes smoke is making her house smell. She is sure Haim has been smoking inside or maybe just too close to the house. She heads out but assigns her husband the task of talking with Haim. Feldman proceeds to go outside and ? yup, you guessed it, smoke a cig. Haim catches Feldman in the act and lights up himself. For some reason, they both decide that they should quit and end up throwing out all their cigarettes.

2007-Dec-27 - buy camel
The behavior encouraged by buy camel is obviously sexual harassment and, more importantly, could lead to more serious crimes like assault and rape. It is a sorry day when a reputable science magazine such as Omni would accept such trash. Then again, maybe we should have expected it from Bob Guccione who also promotes the pornographic publication Penthouse. However disturbing the existence of pornography is, the issue here in this ad is harassment. What kind of message is Camel trying to send out to male smokers and potential smokers -- that it is OK to treat women like a piece of meat? Isn't it time we stopped this madness? It is bad enough that a woman cannot even go jogging without fear of attack. Why should it now be unsafe to go to the beach in broad daylight? Furthermore, judging from the actions of the men at the New Bedford, RI bar where a woman was gang raped, who is going to lift a finger to help someone who is being attacked on the beach? People will just assume the guy is "having a little fun." Well, sexual harassment is not fun, nor should it be tolerated at any time.

The record was not a success and the band moved to Decca Records.

2007-Oct-25 - Buy cigarettes online
The announcers sounded panicked and it was obvious that SOMETHING had happened that was very bad but I couldn't tell what. It was the clerks behind the counter that told us a plane had crashed into the World Center, and another on had hit the Pentagon just before we walked in. At this point we ran back out to Kelly's van where she had a little TV that plugged into the buy cigarettes online lighter. Her mother had sent it to her just before we left for the trip and she had rolled her eyes and said, "Now, what am I going to use this for? I don't watch TV." But we were glad then that we had it.We got into the van and turned it on and watched the smoke pour off the 1st tower with our mouths hanging open and suddenly, right before our eyes, the second plane crashed into the 2nd tower right in front of our eyes.We called our parents and then decided to get away from Atlanta, driving about two hours out of town and camping at a hidden "top secret" lesbian campground in the middle of nowhere (When I say top secret, I mean exactly that. There were no signs. The only way to get there was to get verbal directions from one of the two women who owned it. It took us forever to find it, too).

But that was when cod was to be had by the bucketful. Nowadays, kids abandon the island to work in the oil fields of Alberta. Tourism is probably their best bet for the future. They'll come eventually, but for now, Troake has time to tell stories, including one about Ernie the one-armed fisherman who could light a cigarette with one hand in a rainstorm. If you don't like that one, he's got a million more."The government tells us there's a lot of seals," he says. "But we know there aren't. How? Cuz we don't see any pups, that's how. If there's a lot of seals out there, they're either gay or they're not having sex."Driving through Durrell, I stop to admire a dock with a bright blue shed on the end, a large Canadian flag fluttering above. Someone knocks on the driver's side window."Hey, you wanna look? Just pull over up there. I'm Melvin."Melvin Horwood comes from a generation of fishermen and has started a small exhibition centre at the end of the dock across the road from his home."It's not a museum," he says. "If I called it a museum I'd have to be a registered business and put in washrooms and all that stuff. I don't wanna do that. So it's not a museum."Horwood proudly shows off crab pots and explains how they worked and shows other items, including what he thinks might be the first zipper ever made (it was a small change purse owned by a relative)."The bay out here used to be teeming with fish," he says. "You could pick them up with your bare hands. But the northern cod stock is down to four per cent of its historic level. It'll be gone completely one day."Horwood tells the story of a time not long ago when a giant iceberg blocked the cod traps for 14 days."We tried 100 sticks of dynamite on that berg but we couldn't get it to budge," he says. "We lost maybe 200,000 pounds of cod. It's one of the dangers we have around here, but nowadays the icebergs are great for the tourists."Driving up past Crow Head towards the Long Point lighthouse, a small, brown sign says "Sea Breeze Municipal Park."Picnic tables sit on seas of waving, green grass that overlooks some of the most beautiful, rugged coastline you've ever seen. Waves pound the shore below and a small tour boat rises and falls in the Atlantic swells. Off to your right is a giant metal wheel that's gone orange and red with rust and what looks like a factory overlooking the blue water.555 Belomorkanal Bond Camel Chesterfield Dallas Davidoff Dunhill Epique EsseGauloises Karelia Kent L&M Lucky Strike Magna Marlboro Marlboro Mild Seven Monte Carlo More Pall Mall Parliament Peter I R1 Rothmans Russian Style Salem Sobranie Sovereign Viceroy Virginia Slims Vogue WestWinston

2007-Apr-25 - smoke cigarettes
"I've been on the Internet with other smokers rights groups," says Cracraft. "We're trying to come up with a plan."Cracraft's smoking activism heated up two years ago when he founded Freedom of Choice, a pro-smoking social organization made up of around 20 restaurants. Under Utah law, diners and grills that want to attract the coffee and cigarettes crowd must belong to a social organization. Like private clubs serving mixed drinks, restaurants must sell memberships if they wish to allow a mix of smoke and food.In 1995, after Utah banned smoking from most grub spots, a group called Smokers' Unanimous began selling memberships for $1. Tobacco-friendly restaurants signed up and smokers no longer had to huddle like lepers outside their favorite diner. Then in 1996, Smokers' Unanimous raised its membership fee to $3 and Cracraft sprung into action. He founded Freedom of Choice, kept the membership at $1 and now represents 25,000 members around the state.Still, Freedom of Choice is a social organization without an active political agenda beyond the conversation of its many smoke-friendly coffee klatches.Jan Kenyon at DJ's Family Restaurant hears her customers complaining about the government making life hell for smokers. She joined Smokers' Unanimous and then Freedom of Choice because after Utah restricted smoking, she lost a ton of business. Now, smokers and non-smokers come in for a plate of eggs, a bottomless cup of joe and the freedom to light up."Some of them are on oxygen, but they still come in," says Kenyon. "And some of them still smoke."Dragged into politics: Dan Cracraft wants smokers to unite.Kenyon dabbled with the habit years ago, puffing on Chesterfields for a spell. But even without a current affection for tobacco, she remains determined to defend smokers' rights."It's like trying to take guns away from society," says Kenyon, sounding off on the recently proposed Cigarettes online tax and ongoing litigation against the tobacco companies. "They say they're doing this to keep juveniles from smoking. Well, teenagers are going to find the money for what they want."Forking over the kind of cash it takes to launch a pro-cigarette lobbying effort is another matter. It seems that, for most smokers, the smokers'-rights soap box extends no further than the bar stool or restaurant booth. Smokers like to commiserate, but few take their fight to the streets. That's one reason why Cracraft must log-on in order to find other truly committed smoking activists. He plans to resign as president of Freedom of Choice this summer when the board elects new officers."The only way I'll stay is if the members get off their butts, which might just happen if the McCain bill is passed into law and the cost of tax cigarettes nearly doubles overnight," wrote Cracraft in a letter faxed to City Weekly. For Cracraft, the $1.50 per pack tax hike proposed by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) would add another $90 a month to his two-pack-a-day habit. It's chain-smoking loyalists like this who could rally in support of the golden leaf. Combine a yellow-fingered, grass-roots campaign speared by the likes of Cracraft with the deep pockets of Big Tobacco, and it could take a while for the smoke to clear. But so far, smoking advocates have not found a prominent place at the tobacco policy table. However, groups like the California-based FORCES, which stands for "Fight Ordinances and Restrictions to Control and Eliminate Tobacco," are gaining momentum.Carol Clawson at the Utah Attorney General's office says such groups have faxed in their protests, but have done little else."There hasn't been a major punch here??”a ground swelling that indicates their opposition to the lawsuit," says Clawson. The A.G.'s suit, similar to those in 41 other states, seeks compensation for public funds spent treating tobacco-related ailments.Tobacco giants could be on the hook for billions if they lose these lawsuits, and, as a result, the price of cigarettes could increase significantly. That's bad news for anyone with a habit to feed, but apparently not yet bad enough to raise a widespread rallying cry.

2007-Apr-25 - cheap cigarettes
I am not here to start a fight between who is right or who is wrong. I just want to know if there are others out there who fill as I do and alot of people that I know fill the same. The question is : Is it right for someone not to be able to smoke in a bar, restuarant, or any where else they want to? I know people don't want to be eating while someone is smoking and I respect their right to that, but what right does anyone have to tell another person that they can't have a smoke UNLESS they are underage. Has anyone ever thought about " what if the city, county, or the state tells these bars, clubs and resturants that they can't sure alcohol anymore? How long do you think these places would stay in business if people couldn't enjoy a glass of wine after a meal or you can't have a beer or mixed drinks at their favorite club or bar? What would people do? Everyone starts staying home and keeping their money? Businesses going out of business because people can't go out and enjoy themself because they can't smoke or they can't have a drink. What do businesses do then? Yes there are ALOT of people in this country that don't smoke and there are ALOT of people that don't drink and there are ALOT that don't do either and there are ALOT of people that do. I just think it is wrong to tell people that they can't smoke in these places. I know there are going to be messages about second hand smoke. I know about second hand smoke and it's effects on the non-smoker, but I just want to add one more thing for people to think about before I finish this blog. Who would you want to pass on the road at night. A person that just lit up a cigarettes or a person that just left the bar after drinking 3 or 4 hours or who just left a party after drinking half the night or just left a dinner party where there was wine and champaigne being drank for 4 or 5 hours. I don't know about everyone but as for me myself , I had rather pass a driver that smoking a cigarettes than a person that just come from one of these places after drinking 4 or 5 hours. At least I get to live to see another day after I pass that smoker where as someone that passes a drunk driver might not get to see the next hour. My heart goes out to everyone that has lost loveone in alcohol related accidents and the ones who have lost love ones due to cancer. I just think that the alcohol is just as much a factor in this world as smoking and no one is concerned as much it as smoking. No disrespect to MADD . I think your organazation is a great one. Don't give up the fight.

2007-Apr-25 - discount cigarettes
Health agencies today called on Canada??™s Minister of Health to respond to the recent launch of KOOL cigarettes by strengthening Canada??™s advertising restrictions on tobacco. In a letter to Minister Anne McLellan, the Canadian health groups are calling for strengthening of Canada??™s controls on tobacco marketing. The letter comes on the heels of the launch by British American Tobacco (BAT) of a Canadian version of KOOL tax cigarettes . KOOL is the first international brand to be launched in Canada by BAT since it assumed full ownership of Imperial Tobacco in early 2000. The new KOOL and KOOL FROST were launched a few weeks ago through internet marketing and bar promotions. ???KOOL cigarettes highlight five major flaws in Canada??™s tobacco control regime,??? said Dr. Atul Kapur, president of Physicians for a Smoke-Free Canada. ???Each of these flaws in itself is reason for the Minister of Health to intervene quickly: together they provide a compelling rationale to strengthen federal measures to control tobacco.???Dr. Kapur outlined the five weaknesses highlighted by the launch of this new brand. ???Firstly, the launch of KOOL sigarettes shows that tobacco companies can reach young Canadians through the internet. Secondly, it shows that BAT is interested in launching brands which are advertised in Canada through magazines imported from the United States. Thirdly, they show the important role that retail stores play in the promotion of cigarettes. Fourthly, they show that Canada??™s failure to require health warnings on tobacco promotion encourages the companies to expand their advertising. Fifthly, they show that the proposed ban on ???light??™ and ???mild??™ needs to be much broader to cover all misleading words and images, of which ???KOOL Frost,??? and ???cooling menthol??? are current examples.???
